The Department of Printing and Publication Studies is one of the most recent academic disciplines at the University of Dhaka. As we live in the age of amazing technological development in printing and publication, the printing and publishing industries of the country need expertise in these fields. The prevailing situation demands higher education and specialisation in these fields in the country.

The department mostly focuses on generating a command for the students on technical knowledge and know-how in the field of printing and publication, keeping in mind the world's widely stretched big printing and publishing industry, especially Bangladesh.

Accordingly, the university authority decided to set up the department to create opportunities for our new generations to gain up-to-date knowledge and skills in the printing and publication sector and acquire confidence and abilities in building their shining careers in printing and publishing and other related fields. The Department launched its formal academic programme in January 2017 with the commencement of an 18-month Master’s programme spanning three semesters with 30 students. The students had the opportunity to participate in a six-month-long internship programme during their last semester in the Master’s programme.

The department has launched its bachelor’s programme for the academic session of 2017-18 with 30 students. Now, in 2024, the students of two batches of the Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) programme have already graduated, and the bachelor programme for the other four batches is now going on.

The immediate goal of the department is to provide at least 10% of the academically educated workforce for the printing and publishing industries of Bangladesh by 2025 and to provide 100% of the workforce within the next 50 years to make the industries compatible with leading industries in the world. The ultimate aim of the department is to secure and sustain a strong place at the top of the ladder of well-acclaimed disciplines of printing and publishing to transform it into a centre of excellence in the subcontinent.

The department has a very good collaboration with the mighty printing and publishing industries of Bangladesh, and there is good scope for the students to explore their jobs there or to have their own ventures.

The department has already stirred in the printing and publishing industries of the country, and they have high hopes that the academically trained graduates will fill the void remaining in these two fields in particular.
