Greetings from the Department of Geography and Environment, the oldest department in the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Dhaka. Since its inception in 1948, the department has expanded through incremental improvements in academic programs as well as the development of infrastructure and research facilities to become the region's center of excellence for teaching and research.

We live in a world of beautiful landscapes, boundless complexity, and strenuous difficulty. Geography is the discipline that introduces us to this dynamic world and prepares each of us for the role of global citizen in the twenty-first century. People learn about geography through studying how places and landscapes are produced, how people and surroundings interact, what repercussions occur from our daily actions, and what a broad variety of cultures and societies exist and how we use and misuse the environment by studying geography. People learn to appreciate and care for the world and all of its inhabitants via geography.

Geography is a subject that builds on the experiences of young people, assisting them in formulating questions, developing intellectual abilities, and finding solutions to situations that influence their lives. It introduces students to unique investigation tools such as maps, fieldwork, and the usage of cutting-edge digital communication technology. It awakens children to the beauty and wonder that surrounds them and serves as a source of inspiration and creativity. More importantly, it ensures that students understand the complexities of attitudes and beliefs that determine how we use and misuse the environment. People learn to appreciate and care for the world and all of its inhabitants via geography.

The department has played a pivotal role in disseminating information about diverse elements of geography and creating professional geographers to serve national interests as well as contribute to the international arena. The researches by our faculty members and students have had a major influence on tackling national and global concerns such as the energy crisis, environmental pollution, climate change, sea level rise, rapid urbanization, gender inequality, and sustainable development, among others. Our graduates are well-known professionals in a variety of professional organizations both at national and international arena.

The department invites people who desire to pursue advanced studies and research in geography and the environment, as well as those who want to work together to make the world a better place by addressing the future environmental issues of sustainable development.
