১৯৯২ সালের ১৫ই ডিসেম্বর ভাষাবিজ্ঞান বিভাগ যাত্রা শুরু করে। ইতোমধ্যেই বাংলাদেশের ভাষাচর্চা ও গবেষণায় অন্যতম বিভাগ হিসেবে এ-বিভাগ পরিচিতি লাভ করেছে। শিক্ষা, সংস্কৃতি বিকাশের ক্ষেত্রে এ-বিভাগের নাম তাই সর্বাগ্রে উল্লেখযোগ্য। বিভাগের শিক্ষক ও শিক্ষার্থীগণ দেশ-বিদেশের বিভিন্ন বিশ^বিদ্যালয়ের সেমিনার, কনফারেন্সে অংশগ্রহণ করে ঢাকা বিশ^বিদ্যালয়ের ভাবমূর্তি উজ্জ্বল করে চলেছেন।
আমি ১লা এপ্রিল ২০২১ তারিখে ঐতিহ্যবাহী ভাষাবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের চেয়ারম্যান নিয়োজিত হওয়ায় নিজেকে গৌরবান্বিত মনে করছি। এ উপলক্ষ্যে আমি সবাইকে আন্তরিক অভিনন্দন জানাই। আমাদের প্রাণের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শতর্বষ উদযাপনের শুভক্ষণে বিভাগীয় দায়িত্বভার গ্রহণ- আমার জন্য অত্যন্ত গৌরবের বিষয়। ঢাকা বিশ^বিদ্যালয়ের শতবর্ষী ইতিহাস-ঐতিহ্য, জ্ঞানের বিকাশ, মেধার উৎকর্ষ, মননশীল চিন্তা-চেতনা, সময়োপযোগী পদক্ষেপ ও সৃষ্টিশীল গবেষণাকর্মের মাধ্যমে ভাষাবিজ্ঞান বিভাগ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়কে এক অনন্য উচ্চতায় প্রতিষ্ঠিত করবে বলে আমি আশাবাদী।
ভাষাবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের শিক্ষক, শিক্ষার্থী, স্টাফ-সবাইকে নিয়ে আমাদের ভাষাবিজ্ঞান পরিবার। বিভাগের প্রতিটি কাজে সবাই খুব আন্তরিক। বিভাগের শিক্ষার্থীরা আমাদের প্রাণ। তাঁরা বিভাগ তথা বিশ^বিদ্যালয়কে সর্বদা প্রাণবন্ত করে রাখেন। তাঁদের ভবিষ্যৎ বিনির্মাণই আমাদের মূল লক্ষ্য। তাই শিক্ষার্থীদের ঘিরেই আমাদের যাবতীয় কর্মপ্রয়াস। একটি আত্মনির্ভরশীল ও সমৃদ্ধি জাতি গঠনের উপযোগী শিক্ষা, গবেষণা, দেশপ্রেম ও সাংস্কৃতিক মূল্যবোধের আলোকে তাঁদের গড়ে তোলার মহান ব্রত নিয়েই আমরা বিভাগীয় কার্যক্রম পরিচালনায় সর্বদা নিবেদিত।
পরিশেষে আমি সবার আন্তরিক প্রয়াস, সহযোগিতা ও আশির্বাদ প্রত্যাশা করছি।

Chairman’s Message
Welcome to Department of Linguistics
Department of Linguistics in Dhaka university was established in December, 1992. Since then it has been working as the only university department as well as a linguistics research Centre in Bangladesh. The contribution of this department in the field of education, research, history and cultural development and prosperity of Bangladesh is praiseworthy.
I took over the responsibility as a Chairman of Linguistics Department on 1 April, 2021. So I would like to congratulate and thank to all concerned. I am honored to take the charge of the department as a chairman on the auspicious occasion of the centenary celebration of the University of our Souls. Our department is the upholder of the centenary tradition of Dhaka University. Our collective goal is to take this department and the University to a unique height through the development of knowledge, excellence of talent, thoughtful thinking, timely action and creative research works.
We think that students should be given the main priority as a member of educational institution. So our efforts revolve around the students of the department. Our department has undertaken a number of initiatives to increase the student’s educational, psychological and cultural development. We are always dedicated to conduct activities of the department with the great vow of making them in the light of proper education, research, patriotism and cultural values for building a self-reliant and prosperous nation.
Students at Linguistics Can take forward to stimulating, Productive and rewarding learning experiences that will equip for listening learning and responsibility as global citizens.
I expect everyone's sincere cooperation, committed efforts and blessings.
