Welcome to the Department of Anthropology at the University of Dhaka.
Anthropology is the study of human beings and their culture. It is an important branch of social sciences through academic and applied practices. The department started its academic curriculum under the Faculty of Social Sciences on December 05, 1992. The class of the first batch began in January 1993 (session 1992-1993). The department stepped into its 30 years of establishment. Currently, it has 17 full-time and 02 part-time teachers. Professor Dr. Shaila Sharmeen is the Chairperson of the department. The department has the facilities of a classroom, seminar library, computer lab, and Internet for the students. It offers the Bachelor of Social Science (BSS) Honors, Master of Social Science (MSS), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) courses. Since 1992, more than fifteen hundred students have received BSS and MSS degrees. More than 25 students were awarded Ph.D. and MPhil degrees during the same period.
Since its inception, the Department of Anthropology has sought to achieve the highest possible distinction for teaching and scholarly research. It has accomplished this by extending boundaries of knowledge in traditional and new social sciences fields. We promote the highest academic standards in our teaching, our scholarship, and the connections we build between them. Synchronized with our institution’s rich heritage, the Department is committed to producing the country’s leader in all facets, from classroom instruction to national policy setting. Our values-based commitment is to create an optimal learning environment for all students from all over the country and help expand the horizons of knowledge and culture among students, colleagues, and the general citizenry. We devote all of our resources and energies to developing strong mission-driven scholarship programs (research and creative activities) in the acquisition, synthesis, dissemination, and creation of new research knowledge, coupled with the application of knowledge and the invigoration of undergraduate and graduate education.
