Sufia Kamal Lecture Series on Women and Community-Based Adaptation (CBA): An Intersectional Analysis from the Context of Bangladesh
The Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka, organized a seminar titled “Women and Community-Based Adaptation (CBA): An Intersectional Analysis from the Context of Bangladesh” under the Sufia Kamal Lecture Series. The seminar was held on 16 August 2026, Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in Room 5030 of the Department of Women and Gender Studies.
Dr. Gulay Jannat, Assistant Professor, Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka, shared her PhD research and the key findings on women’s participation and experiences in community-based adaptation in coastal Bangladesh.

Dr. Jannat discussed how CBA initiatives are shaped not only by participation and community engagement but also by power, authority, knowledge, and subjectivity. Drawing on an intersectional feminist perspective, she highlighted that women cannot be treated as a homogeneous group. Their opportunities for participation, access to resources, decision-making, and experiences of empowerment differ according to intersecting social identities, particularly ethnicity and religion. Dr. Jannat also highlighted women’s agency, diverse experiences, and knowledge and argued for more inclusive, locally grounded, and intersectionally informed approaches to community-based adaptation.

The seminar was hosted by Dr. Sayed Saikh Imtiaz, Professor, Department of Women and Gender Studies. Professor Kazi Mohammad Mahbobor Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Sabiha Yeasmin Rosy, Chairperson and Associate Professor of the Department of Women and Gender Studies, along with faculty members and students of the Department, attended the seminar.
